“Ringtone” examines Kigurumi, a Japanese form of cosplay (short for “costume play”), a performance art in which players wear costumes to represent a specific cartoon character, stuffed animal or idea. In Simmons’s intriguing film, phone ringtones provide the soundtrack and images of the dancing Kigurumi are edited together as still frame animation, giving the performance a chopped-up effect of unnatural appearing motions.
The exhibit is part of Tech@Fest, a special series of events at The New Yorker Festival focussed on the radical implications of technological advancements and their potential to reshape society.
About the Artist: Laurie Simmons was born on Long Island, New York, in 1949. She received a BFA from the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, in 1971.Her work blends political, psychological and conceptual approaches to making art—transforming film and photography’s propensity to objectify people, particularly women, into a critique of the medium.
“Ringtone” is currently featured as part of PAUSE: PAUSE is a public art initiative that transforms The Cosmopolitan’s LED signs into spectacular large-scale digital canvases showcasing work by leading contemporary artists. Viewers are instantly transported from the everyday buzz of the strip to a thought-provoking place of contemplation and reflection. This urban art oasis turns an everyday sign into a cultural portal with the ability to touch everyone who passes by.
PAUSE is presented in partnership with Art Production Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to commissioning and producing ambitious public art projects, reaching new audiences and expanding awareness through contemporary art.
